What are RSS feeds?
An RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed (also known as "news feed")
is a listing of a Web site's content, and it is updated whenever new
content is published to the site. News readers "subscribe"
to RSS feeds so that updated stories from one site or multiple sites
will appear on a single, designated news reader service.
A news feed might contain a list of story headlines, a list of
excerpts from stories, or a list containing each story from the
Web site (Olivet's news feeds contain story headlines). All news
feeds will link back to the Web site for the full story. Sites like
ABCNews.com,
ESPN.com, and the
New York Times all have syndicated feeds.
If you visit a lot of Web sites on a daily basis, or read a lot of
blogs, RSS feeds and news readers can save you a lot of time. You
won't have to visit many sites, multiple times every day, to see if
there are updates. Your news reader will automatically send you the
latest news, and you can click on the stories that are of interest to
you!
How do you get started?
In order to make use of an RSS feed, you'll need a news feed reader.
Some commonly used news readers are
Feed Demon,
Sharp Reader, and
NewsGator (an Outlook plugin) for Windows,
NetNewsWire and
Shrook for Macs.
Also, some web portal sites such as
My Yahoo! and
Google allow
you to subscribe to news feeds so they are automatically inserted into
your customized page.
You can find even more news readers at
itopik.com.
